Credit Repair – Helpful Tips For Writing Disputing Letters

Hector Milla asked:

Writing dispute letters when there is an account you wish to have removed from your credit report need not be a difficult task. There are many ways to approach writing letters, even if the item could be constituted as technically correct.

An example of a dispute letter is as follows:

November 1, 2008

Credit Bureau
123 Anywhere St.
Anywhere, USA 12345

Re: (file number here)

To whom it may concern:

My name is Jane Smith, and my Social Security Number is 123-45-6789. I am writing because when I recently viewed my credit report with your agency, I found some incorrect information.

I dispute the validity of this information.

MBNA MasterCard account number XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-1234
Amount owed: $1,234
Status: Charge-off

I have never had a charge-off matching the information listed. Please remove this item immediately. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Jane Smith

123 Some Road
Anywhere, USA 12345
Date of birth: 01/01/1981

Replace the information with what applies to you, and you have a credit disputing letter! Always be careful to not give away too much information about the account. It is the credit reporting agency’s responsibility to prove all information they issue on people, not yours.

If you do not hear back within 30 days, the credit reporting agency may have violated the law. To protect your rights, always send such correspondence with tracking information and keep copies of your letters for your own records. If the item on your credit report cannot be proved, it must be removed. This especially works well for accounts that are old or where the lender has gone out of business.
