Bad credit can quickly turn your life into a nightmare. Nowadays, it takes good credit not only to borrow money but also to get a job or rent an apartment. Credit repair can help you turn your credit situation around and improve your credit to a level that is more acceptable for lenders, potential employers, and landlords. Let’s look at some of the best credit repair tips that can reverse your bad credit situation and all of the negative effects that accompany having a damaged credit file.

Tip 1

You cannot fix a problem until you know the extent of the problem. For this reason, it is important that you never attempt credit repair until you get a good look at your credit reports from all three major credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, and Trans Union). Look for errors and misinformation that might be reported about you. Pull your report from all three bureaus as each can have a different reflection of the true nature of your credit performance. When disputing an item on your credit record, do so via certified mail through the postal service to make the greatest impact on the bureau (and to retain a record that you are disputing the item). The bureaus usually handle disputes in around thirty to forty-five days; if they cannot prove a debt, they must delete it.
Tip 2

Pay your bills on time. This is one of the single most important things for any person who is going through credit repair to do. If you will be late with a payment, try your hardest to let the creditor know in advance in order to work out an agreement for the late payment – this will often keep the creditor from making a negative notation on your credit file.

Tip 3

Pay down multiple revolving debts. Revolving debt increases your available credit to debt ratio. Paying down the debts you owe reduces this ratio – which is an important determinant that is looked at by most lenders when determining your creditworthiness or lack of creditworthiness. It is suggested that you run no more than a thirty percent balance on credit cards – pay off any amount greater than thirty percent of the available credit each and every month.

Tip 4

Get counseling. Credit counseling can help you recognize the habits that you might have that are contributing to your overall financial decline. Spending patterns and impulse spending are issues that can be discussed in credit counseling that can go a long ways towards helping you with credit repair.
